What Do Trees Need to Stay Healthy?

What Do Trees Need to Stay Healthy?

Trees are one of the most valuable natural resources on planet Earth, because they provide us with an oxygen source, shade during times of hot weather, and a great many pleasant memories besides. In order to ensure that trees remain healthy and thriving, they must be properly cared for and maintained. There are a number of things trees require in order to maintain good health, especially in urban areas which are subject to more severe pollution, and where cramped living space can have an impact on their overall health. Here are some of the things needed by trees to stay healthy, so they can remain beautiful and provide humans with all the benefits we have enjoyed for centuries.

Proper location

Trees must be planted in an appropriate location in order to thrive. One location you should avoid is anywhere around power lines, but if you have no choice, you should make sure to just plant a small tree such as a dogwood. Before choosing a specific species of tree to plant, you should investigate the type of soil which is present your landscape, and have an understanding of how much sun your area typically receives. Any location you choose should provide sufficient space, so that the tree’s roots have plenty of room to spread out and don’t become compacted.

Proper pruning

In order for a tree to enjoy optimal health and to retain its beauty, it must have limbs and branches pruned away, when they are either weak, dying, or dead. When dead branches are left in place, they can become a tremendous attraction for pests and other varmints which may then spread disease to your trees, as well as to all those in the area. Dead branches are also a significant hazard, in that they can fall at any time and either harm property or humans who happen to be below. Learn about the proper pruning technique for the specific species of tree you have planted, and perform regular pruning at the start of a growing season.

Adequate water and nutrients

Once they’re fully mature, most trees are able to fend for themselves without much external assistance. However, there are some circumstances where trees require a bit of intervention in order to help them along their way. For example, a newly transplanted tree will need a little more attention than an older established tree, since it can suffer from transplant shock. Younger trees typically require more watering than older trees, because their root systems are not as well established, and cannot provide the tree with the water and nutrients which are required. Fertilizers can provide a boost to your trees to help them get more of the nutrients they need, so they can flourish and be healthier, but be careful not to over-fertilize, because that can actually be harmful.

Don’t harm root systems

The root system of any tree is absolutely essential for extracting water and nutrients from the surrounding soil. Any time roots become stressed or damaged, that will limit the influx of those vital nutrients and water. That means you should be as careful as possible whenever you’re doing any digging around a tree, or when any construction is taking place around your trees. Heavy equipment should not be used in the area where you have trees planted, because that can compact the soil and damage the root systems. It doesn’t take much to be very conscious of what you’re doing around a tree and its root system, so make the extra effort and help to keep a strong root system in place for your trees.
